Summer Boredom Busters

Now that the summer heat is here, Mothers unite to keep little ones busy. Indeed, summer allows children to learn in a less structured setting. In this post, we offer some ideas to keep your little treasures physically active and mentally challenged during the long, summer days ahead.

Squirt Gun Ingenuity

Squirt gun fun isn’t limited to water. Introduce little hands to a wet world of color designed to help your child discover what has not existed before. Preschool art can instill a creative curiosity by allowing a safe way to explore risk taking and opens the door to many creative possibilities.

Ice is Nice

How can you teach that there is more than one solution to the same problem? Hiding toys, beads, plastic animals inside a giant ice block is a very cool way to challenge little hands. Besides, who doesn’t love a treasure hunt? Our earliest creative expressions were recorded in petroglyphs, cave paintings, and ancient sculptures. Let them explore an ice sculpture!

Shadow Painting

“I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.”  Robert Lewis Stevenson

So, head out to the driveway and use yourself, your bike, the basketball hoop, to trace a shadow. Feel free to do the tracings during the time of day when the shadows are the best, and make art out of them later. Set out a pan or bucket of water. Dipping sidewalk chalk in water will provide a more vivid color on the driveway. Turn this activity into a STEM activity by tracing at several points throughout the day to create different types of shadows and help your child to explore the science of shadows.

This summer, allow your children to be active learners throughout the day: exploring with materials, learning by doing, and helping them explore. Art nourishes a child’s soul and true creative spirit!
